Yes, we are going to have to trade some of our surplus. Problem is, the guys we regard as surplus aren't going to bring much and i'm not eager to trade top prospects. When people talk about trading Williams, Altherr, Sanchez, Kilome my instant thought is that I'd rather not, and really see no need to as long as we can afford to buy guys to fill our needs. Now eventually, we are going to know whether Cozens, Quinn, Brito, Grullon, Tocci, Kilome, Moniak, Randolph, Haseley, Eflin, Thompson, VV, Gowdy, Irvin have real value going forward or not. The problem is, until the point that we really know, nobody else knows either, so nobody will give you much of anything for them.
I'd rather trade from the ML known and have value pile.so...Rupp , Galvis, Hernandez, others in future.
Trading minor leaguers of real value in order to get an MLB player at a lesser price is the sort of thing a team should do when it's already on top -- pretty much at the time the Phillies did it during the golden era.
Today and for the next several years, our biggest tool and most available resource is $$. If we don't make maximum use of it while we can, it will be just the latest in a long line of missed opportunities to get better quicker.
